The biotech sector includes companies whose products benefit people by treating diseases with life-saving medicines and therapies in addition to improving the yields of crops and generating environmentally friendly chemicals and fuels. Bioinformatics is another area which involves the study of biological information and processes and can be applied to a variety of industries.

Biotech’s origins date back to the early 1970s, when recombinant DNA technology (genetic engineering) was developed and later patented. This technique enables scientists to create production cells that then begin to produce important protein molecules.

Biotechnology is heavily used in the target-discovery programs of a majority of pharmaceutical companies today. Small companies are also present in the field that employ exclusive techniques to develop new therapeutic drugs.

Other biotechnology-related applications are being investigated by companies that focus on agro biology cosmetics and food technology industrial biotechnology, nutraceuticals and food technology as well as the field of veterinary medicine. Fully integrated Pharma companies are massive commercial enterprises that study and develop, manufacture and market branded or generic drugs and medicines.

Many new technologies are transforming the biotech industry, making it possible for companies to test their strategies with respect to conditions that are understood mechanisms (such as sickle cell disease) and reaches a larger patient populations. Certain companies are working to create new treatments for diseases that haven’t been addressed, such as Duchenne muscle dystrophy.
